ONE HOUR.
YOUR FIRST AI BUILD.

First Light is NORTH's free starter experience. In about an hour, you'll learn what AI actually is, design your own prompt, and ship a working AI-for-Good tool that helps someone you know. No login. No installs. No teacher required (but they're welcome too).

SPOT THE PROBLEM.

Every great AI starts with a problem worth solving.

Before you write a single line of code or a single prompt, the most important step is picking a problem you actually care about. AI doesn't decide what matters — you do. Look around your neighborhood. What's something that frustrates people? Confuses people? Wastes their time? That's your problem.
There is no "too small" problem. The bus runs late. The recycling rules are confusing. Older folks don't know who their city councilmember is. Real problems, real wins.
STAGE 02 · 10 MIN

MEET THE AI.

AI is not magic. It's a really good pattern-matcher.

A Large Language Model (LLM) has read more text than any human ever could. When you give it a prompt, it doesn't "think" — it predicts what words usually come next, based on everything it's seen. That's it. That's the whole trick. The skill isn't getting AI to think — it's writing instructions so clear that its prediction is useful.
  • →AI is fast — but only as good as your instructions.
  • →AI gets things wrong — your job is to catch it.
  • →AI doesn't know your neighborhood — you have to teach it.
STAGE 03 · 15 MIN

DESIGN YOUR PROMPT.

A prompt is a recipe. Be specific or get mush.

Good prompts have four parts: who the AI should act as, what it should do, who it's for, and what the output should look like. Pick a community problem below — or write your own — and we'll help you shape a prompt that produces something actually useful.
STAGE 04 · 15 MIN

BUILD IT LIVE.

Now run your prompt against a real AI. See what happens.

When you click Run, your prompt goes to a real LLM and comes back with an answer. Read it carefully: • Is it actually useful? • Is anything wrong, misleading, or confusing? • Who in your community would benefit — and who might it leave out? Edit your prompt and run it again. This is the loop every real AI engineer lives in.
STAGE 05 · 10 MIN

SHARE WHAT YOU BUILT.

You built a working AI tool. Now tell someone.

In one hour, you went from idea to working community AI tool. That's farther than most adults ever get. Copy your prompt + result and share it with a teacher, a parent, or a neighbor. Then ask: "Would this actually help?" That last question is what separates an AI demo from an AI tool. Keep asking it.

// You did it

THAT WAS FIRST LIGHT.

One hour ago you'd never built an AI tool. Now you have. The rest of NORTH is the same thing — just deeper, taught by real instructors, with real Python under the hood.
